Baby taken from parents who wanted 2nd doctor's opinion

Baby taken from parents who wanted 2nd doctor's opinion

Anna argued with doctors about getting a second opinion. Without a proper discharge, she finally took Sammy out of the hospital to get a second opinion at Kaiser Permanente.

“The police showed up there. They saw that the baby was fine,” Anna said. “They told us that Sutter was telling them so much bad stuff that they thought that this baby is dying on our arms.”

Medical records from the doctor treating Sammy at Kaiser Permanente said the baby as clinically safe to go home with his parents. The doctor added, “I do not have concern for the safety of the child at home with his parents.”

“So police saw the report from the doctors, said, ‘okay guys, you have a good day,’ and they walked away,” Anna said.

Anna said the next day police and child protective services showed up on her doorstep. Alex Nikolayev said he met them outside a short time after they arrived.

“I was pushed against the building, smacked down. I said, ‘am I being placed under arrest?’ He smacked me down onto the ground, yelled out, ‘I think I got the keys to the house,’” Alex said.

Then police let themselves inside.

On home video shot with a camera Anna set up herself, police can be seen entering her front door on Wednesday.

“I’m going to grab your baby, and don’t resist, and don’t fight me ok?” a Sacramento police officer said in the video.

Internet sales tax bill divides Republicans, vote looms in Senate

Internet sales tax bill divides Republicans, vote looms in Senate

A contentious bill which could come for a final vote in the Senate as early as Thursday would empower states to make online retailers collect sales taxes for purchases made over the Internet. Though it would likely face more resistance in the House, where the anti-tax creed is more pronounced, a number of Senate Republicans — and Republican governors — are supporting the bill.

Ron Paul: Police manhunt for Boston Marathon bombing suspect scarier than attack

They reminded of a “military coup in a far off banana republic,” he said, Politico reported. “Force lockdown of a city. Militarized police riding tanks in the streets. Door-to-door armed searches without warrant. Families thrown out of their homes at gunpoint to be searched without probable cause. Businesses forced to close. Transport shut down.”

Mr. Paul reminded the surviving suspect, 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was ultimately discovered by a civilian, and not due to police crackdown

Democrat Admits Background Checks Won’t Work

Sullum writes that the trafficking proposal is just an example of overcriminalization. “That seems a bit redundant, since transferring a gun to someone you know or have reasonable cause to believe falls into a prohibited category is already a felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison,” wrote Sullum. “Apparently Gillibrand wants to make it even more illegal, which she says is ‘complementary to background checks.’ There you have the theory underlying the gun controls favored by President Obama in a nutshell: None of these measures on its own will do anything to reduce crime, but if we pass them all together…well, they still won’t do anything, but they will create the appearance of doing something.”

John Kelly: NASA still aiming for manned Mars mission

The mission being planned to the asteroid will be a big part in making a mission to Mars possible. Getting there will require developing and flying the super rocket NASA would ultimately need for a trip to Mars, as well as the first model of the Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle called Orion. It will require more complex spacewalking equipment and capabilities. And new propulsion technology. And more extended flights.

Politics: Everything is Rigged: The Biggest Financial Scandal Yet

Conspiracy theorists of the world, believers in the hidden hands of the Rothschilds and the Masons and the Illuminati, we skeptics owe you an apology. You were right. The players may be a little different, but your basic premise is correct: The world is a rigged game. We found this out in recent months, when a series of related corruption stories spilled out of the financial sector, suggesting the world’s largest banks may be fixing the prices of, well, just about everything.

Taxes: President Obama's budget would hit middle class

“The president keeps breaking his campaign pledge to not tax the middle class — first with his health care law and now with these tax hikes in his budget,” Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, the top GOP member on the Finance Committee, told POLITICO. “As I’ve said before, when it comes to this White House and its penchant for wanting to raise taxes, everyone — including those middle-class families the president says he wants to help — needs to watch their wallets.”

Citing U.S. debt, Arizona set to OK gold, silver currency

Arizona is on track to become the second state in the nation to recognize gold and silver coins as legal tender. It would join Utah as part of a conservative movement arising out of a lack of confidence in the Federal Reserve and a fear that paper money could become virtually worthless as U.S. debt deflates the value of the dollar.

In Boston, our bloated surveillance state didn’t work

In Boston, our bloated surveillance state didn’t work

Remarkably, this message of the paramilitarized surveillance state was in no way challenged merely because it was inaccurate. By the time Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick ended the “shelter in place” request, the second suspect had still not been found. Suddenly, the Boston public was supposed to believe that they were magically safer after the lockdown ended than before. But lest one come to conclude that this suggested a failure of the militant and closely watchful surveillance state, Rachel Maddow, Erin Burnett and other cable news heads happily rushed to its vindication by triumphantly exclaiming the insightful fruits of the years-long “See Something, Say Something” campaign by the Department of Homeland Security.

The rough description that the media had in common was this: A guy walked out to his boat to smoke a cigarette, saw something moving, and lifted the tarp — only to find the injured suspect. At which point, he retreated and called the police! Would the boat owner have acted differently prior to the “See Something, Say Something” campaign? Never mind.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev charged with using weapon of mass destruction

The charges include one count of using and conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction – an improvised explosive device or IED – against persons and property within the United States resulting in death, and one count of malicious destruction of property by means of an explosive device, resulting in death. US prosecutors did not announce whether they would seek the death penalty.

---

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to diminish the horror of what this guy did at all... But didn't the WMD label used to be reserved for chemical, biological and nuclear weapons? Or are we saying George Bush was right all along? Surely Iraq had pressure cookers...

The Bill of Rights was written for Dzhokar Tsarnaev

The Bill of Rights was written for Dzhokar Tsarnaev

Not only did the militarized domestic law enforcement complex put the City of Boston under martial law, but nobody seems to have found it out of the ordinary, much less outrageous. Yes, a few journalists like libertarian Anthony Gregory raised a finger. But, for the most part, nobody seemed to mind that the entire city was under military siege, complete with paramilitary units in full battle gear, battlefield ordinance and tanks.

Boston Tried a Police State and it Failed

Boston Tried a Police State and it Failed

Think about that. Boston was turned into a giant prison for a day to catch a teenager with pressure cooker bombs.

What does this mean?

1. Terrorism “Works”

For a maximum investment of perhaps $1 or $2 thousand dollars, ideologically-motivated individuals can cost the economy perhaps as much as $1 billion dollars in economic output. Nobody yet knows how much it costs to shut down down Boston for a day but $1 billion is about how much the city produces on a daily basis. The return on investment for an enterprising terrorist could be as much as 500,000%.

Boston Bombing Lessons: Martial Law Doesn't Work

Boston Bombing Lessons: Martial Law Doesn't Work

In the end, if the goal of the terrorists was to terrorize, the terrorists won in Boston. Rather than returning to its ordinary business, one of the world’s greatest cities was terrorized, and even shut down, for days by the two suspects identified by authorities as Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his older (deceased) brother Tamerlan. The two presumably hated America for its freedom, and were able to get the government to take away much of those freedoms from its citizens for a period of time.

Are we becoming a police state? Five things that have civil liberties advocates nervous

Are we becoming a police state? Five things that have civil liberties advocates nervous

The indefinite detention provision is just one of many trends in policing and law enforcement that have civil liberties advocates alarmed. New external threats, as well as technological advancements, are posing new challenges to our Constitutional rights, advocates say. Policymakers are debating those issues in Congress and in the courts right now, and the decisions they make could have fundamental consequences for what it means to be an American.

Sen. Feinstein: Treating Bombing Suspect as an Enemy Combatant Would Be 'Unconstitutional'

Sen. Feinstein: Treating Bombing Suspect as an Enemy Combatant Would Be 'Unconstitutional'

On Fox News Sunday, chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) said she “believes very strongly” that the Boston bombing suspect should be read his Miranda rights and given a lawyer.

“I think that’s the only legal way to proceed. I do not believe under the military commission law that he is eligible for that (enemy combatant status). It would be unconstitutional to do that,” Sen. Feinstein said.

---

I do not agree with Feinstein on much (in fact, this is the only specific case I can recall) but she is right here. If the Constitution is only going to apply when it is popular or when the government says so then it may as well not apply at all. This guy is an American citizen and he gets the same rights as everyone else or we have already lost the freedoms we are supposedly protecting.

In avoiding one controversy — the cost of providing millions of newly legalized immigrants with ObamaCare subsidies — the Senate “Gang of Eight” may have risked walking into another.

CISPA Voids Private Contracts, Undermines Rule of Law

CISPA Voids Private Contracts, Undermines Rule of Law

While CISPA’s sponsors emphasize “voluntary” information sharing, the bill actually cannibalizes private contracts between cloud computing providers and their customers, which include many individuals and small businesses. CISPA’s sweeping immunity provision in subsection (b)(4) permits a provider to break its privacy promises to users with impunity. Indeed, the bill gives firms blanket immunity for all acts involving cyber threat information sharing, so long as such acts are taken in “good faith” – even if companies have not taken any reasonable steps prior to sharing information to ensure that it pertains to an actual cyber threat.

CISPA also permits government agencies to recklessly mishandle private information, providing absolutely no recourse to businesses and individuals harmed by such wrongdoing unless the violation is “willful[] or intentional[].”

The absurdities of the income tax

The absurdities of the income tax

There is some finite cost to defending the borders, running a court system, and administering “justice.” For those who believe that government should do more (like conservatives and liberals), there is likewise a finite cost for building roads, running healthcare programs and taking care of the poor. That cost doesn’t change significantly overnight or even from year to year.

But the income tax doesn’t reflect this. If productivity and therefore incomes double due to some new technology, the amount of money owed to the government doubles, even though there are less poor people, more private sector “infrastructure” projects and less crime (crime goes up during recessions, down during booms). The more productive Americans are, the bigger and more oppressive a government they get.

Talk about a bad incentive.

Obama Expands His Power to Kill While Reducing Our Capacity to Defend Ourselves

Their boss in the White House has never publicly answered that question, but he has exercised that horrific power without publicly defending or legally justifying it. When lawyers for potential victims of presidential killings (how terrifying does that sound?) sought to ascertain the source of that power, the president dispatched Justice Department lawyers into court to persuade judges that the legal argument supporting killings is classified. That’s because, those Justice Department lawyers argued, the decisions to kill—just like Star Chamber’s decisions to kill—are made in secret; hence, the legal support for the killings must be kept secret.

Arizona Legislature Approves Gold and Silver as Money

Under the Arizona SB 1439 legislation, precious metals would be treated just like debt-based fiat dollars for taxation and regulation purposes. However, unlike fiat dollars, nobody would be forced to accept gold or silver currency. While the original Senate bill would have allowed citizens to pay state taxes in any form of money, including precious metals, the House added an amendment striking that provision in an effort to ease opposition from the state Department of Revenue.

NASA is planning for a robotic spaceship to lasso a small asteroid and park it near the moon for astronauts to explore, a top senator said Friday.

The ship would capture the 500-ton, 25-foot asteroid in 2019. Then using an Orion space capsule, a crew of about four astronauts would nuzzle up next to the rock in 2021 for spacewalking exploration, according to a government document obtained by The Associated Press.
