Byte (February 1988)

Among the mainstream computer magazines at the time, Byte tended to be the most technical. Unlike PC specific magazines such as PC Magazine and PC World, Byte also covered non-PC systems, at least for as long as they were viable. The February 1988 issue includes: Byte (February 1988)

Computer Shopper (February 1988)

Computer Shopper was, without a doubt, the largest computer magazine that ever existed. These things were frequently the size of a telephone book. The February 1988 issue is fairly modest at only little only 500 pages. While known primarily has the best shopper's guide for computer parts before the Internet came along and took that role, it had lots of great articles and other content as well. This issue includes: Computer Shopper (February 1988)

Digital Archaeology: Dell Inspiron 530s

Physically, the Dell Inspiron 530s is identical to the 531s which I have looked at previously. Both are slimline systems. The difference is entirely with the internals. While the 531s is AMD based, the 530s is Intel based. The 531s I have has a Athlon X2 5000 while this 530s has a Pentium Dual Core E2200. Digital Archaeology: Dell Inspiron 530sD

Computer & Video Games (October 1988)

Computer & Video Games was published in the U.K. from 1981 until at least 2004. It was the longst running print video game magazine that I am aware of. The October 1988 issue includes: Computer & Video Games (October 1988)

Compute!'s Gazette (June 1990)

Compute!'s Gazette was Compute!'s Commodore 64 spin-off magazine. It was one of the most popular Commodore 64 magazines but the June 1990 issue would be the last. However, it would continue on as a disk only publication for another 5 years. This issue includes: Compute!'s Gazette (June 1990)

VideoGames & Computer Entertainment (June 1990)

VideoGames & Computer Entertainment (June 1990): VideoGames & Computer Entertainment was my favorite video game magazine of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Some of the key people responsible for the original Electronic Games magazine were involved with VG&CE. It eventually evolved into Tips & Tricks which wasn't really my cup of tea. The June 1990 issue of VG&CE includes:

Byte (July 1984)

Byte (July 1984): Throughout much of the 1980s, Byte was really the magazine to have if you were into computers. It covered pretty much everything and was an excellent resource, especially before the PC dominated everything. The July 1984 issue includes:

Advanced Computer Entertainment (January 1988)

Advanced Computer Entertainment (January 1988): Advanced Computer Entertainment is a computer entertainment magazine that was published in the U.K. in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It covered systems such as the Commodore 64, Spectrum, Amiga, Atari ST, and others. It wasn't exclusively a gaming magazine (for instance, this issue includes features on MIDI and computer graphics) but a large portion of the content was dedicated to gaming. The January 1988 issue includes:

General Chaos (Sega Genesis)

General Chaos (Sega Genesis): General Chaos was released by Electronic Arts for the Sega Genesis in 1993. While it never seemed to gain much traction, it was really a game ahead of its time. It is basically a squad based real-time strategy game. Warcraft, the game that really popularized the real-time strategy genre in general, wasn't released until the following year.

Palamedes (NES)

Palamedes (NES): Palamedes is a relatively obscure puzzle game for the Nintendo Entertainment System that was released in 1990. It's probably far more obscure than it really should have been as it was originally an arcade game by Taito and it is a fairly solid game for those that like the puzzle genre. It's not terribly flashy and I think it just got lost in the shuffle in what was probably the most prolific time for the NES and probably puzzle games as well as Tetris had been released the year before.

Digital Archaeology: Floppy Disk #14 - LORDMHM.DOC: This post includes the contents of LORDMHM.DOC. It contains a discussion post dated August 2nd, 1984 and it appears to be the last message in a conversation about interacting with people via the computer (or via "teleconferencing"). This appears to have been part of a conversation in a public forum, presumably on Delphi. It still sounds pretty applicable today.

Zzap! 64 (November 1987)

Zzap! 64 (November 1987): Here in the U.S., we never had a gaming magazine dedicated to the Commodore 64. I would have loved such a thing, especially as this one, published in the U.K. was published well into the 1990s and I was still using my Commodore 64 as my primary computer up through most of 1993. The November 1987 issue of Zzap! 64 includes:

Compute!'s Gazette (March 1987)

Compute!'s Gazette (March 1987): Compute!'s Gazette was a spin-off of Compute! magazine that exclusively covered Commodore 8-bit computers (mostly the Commodore 64). It was probably one of the two most popular Commodore 64 magazines with RUN being the other one. The March 1987 issue includes:

Byte (April 1985)

Byte (April 1985): You really got your money's worth when you bought an issue of Byte in the 1980s. For only $3.50 per issue (less if you were a subscriber), you got a whopping 500 pages. And the cover story in April 1985? Artificial Intelligence. Contents of this issue includes:
