This post includes the contents of INTRO.DOC. This file is dated September 2nd, 1985 and is in a subdirectory called TELEPSYC. I've posted several documents from this subdirectory and I've been assuming that they came from Delphi since so much of the stuff I've posted from this disk (and others) have been from Delphi. However, based on this file, it looks like all of the files in this subdirectory came from a BBS that operated as a telecommunications counseling service. This document is a log of an initial logon and sign-up on this BBS so it has a ton of introductory information on how the service works. Previous documents from this subdirectory are most likely various 'pamphlets' that could be read on the BBS.

Digital Archaeology: Codex (Floppy Disk) #8 (part 2)
Continuing the exploration of the contents of this floppy disk (see the first part here). This disk is from a batch I picked up at a thrift store a number of years ago. As I have been digging through these disks, it has become obvious that at least some of them were once owned by someone named Connie A. Buys who used to run the "Close Encounters" Special Interest Group (SIG) on Delphi in the mid 1980s.
My understanding is that a SIG, as it relates to Delphi, consisted of forums, live chat and files to download centered around a particular topic or theme. In this case, "Close Encounters" was about relationships and sex, particularly as it related to the online world of the day. Everything was text based from whatever terminal program you used to dial in to Delphi's servers. Many of these disks have forum messages, e-mails and chat session logs. All of this is pre-internet stuff and I don't know if there are any archives in existence today of what was on Delphi in the 1980s. In any case, much of this stuff would have been private at the time and some of it is quite personal.
I'm splitting up the contents of this disk (descriptively labeled "File Disk") since it contains a number of documents, some of which are pretty long. The second document I'm posting (DM1001B.DOC) is a series of e-mails, some of which are, um, love letters and some of which are administrative in nature about running the SIG. All are from October 1st, 1985.

My Beloved Darling Connie,
I am simply dying of curiousity about something and I hope you don't
mind my asking and more importantly I hope you don't mind answering.
I was on-line and typing to John Sunday night and he asked if we were
still together and my reply was "no! All gone! [sigh]" and
IMMEDIATELY he typed back "brb sending mail" and I would have put
money on it that he that very instant sent mail to YOU!!
He would disappoint me I THINK if he didn't - SO what I am asking is
did you get mail from John that was originated at approx. 11 PM
Sunday!!!
I am NOT asking WHAT it was but just from his behavior I have to
believe that he was sending it to you!! PLEASE! answer my curiousity!
NOSEY AREN'T I !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"E" flag - allows you to edit announcements and experiment with
Forms.
"D" flag - allows you to access the database maintenance features.
"V" flag - vendor flag in Shopping.
I will also be forwarding to you some messages from Insiders Sig
regarding the Forms program.
Experiement as you wish with these flags - however please do keep me

Digital Archaeology: Floppy Disk #14 – FEMALE.DOC
This post includes the contents of FEMALE.DOC. This file is dated September 2nd, 1985 and is in a subdirectory called TELEPSYC. This is an article on nonmedical female sexual problems. No name or other credit is listed in the file. I tried doing a web search on a few strings from this article but couldn't find anything so I'm not sure who wrote it. Like the last few posts in this series, I believe this article came from a special interest group or some other kind of feature or area on Delphi called "TelePsych". As far as I can tell, these articles were exclusive to Delphi.

Digital Archaeology: Codex (Floppy Disk) #8 (part 1)
If I'm counting right, this is the eighth 5.25" disk I have documented the contents of so far (see the last one here). All of them so far are from a batch I picked up at a thrift store a number of years ago.
All of this is pre-internet stuff and I don't know if there are any archives in existence today of what was on Delphi in the 1980s. In any case, much of this stuff would have been private at the time and some of it is quite personal.
This contents of this disk (descriptively labeled "File Disk") will be split up into multiple posts since it contains a number of documents, some of which are pretty long. This first document (ARNE.DOC) is a series of e-mails questioning whether or not one of the participants in the SIG is of the appropriate age (i.e. 18+). Like most of the other documents, this one appears to be a raw terminal log so e-mails appear in the order read which isn't always necessarily chronological and it includes commands and other editing artifacts.

Subj: Close Encounters SIG & Age Restriction
Hello Arne,
It has come to my attention that there is some question about how old you are.
One of the membership requirements we have in Close Encounters sig is that
one must be 18 years old or older.
This information has been included in many areas of the sig, including the
non-member message and new-member messages available to you when you first
accessed this sig. It is a formal part of my contract with Delphi that I
must enforce to the best of my ability.
This information is also available to you in the Announcements> Membership
section of the sig for review at any time and other such notices calling
*all* sig members attention to this have been posted to be read automatically
upon entry to the sig.
Just in case you missed it, tho, I would like to quote as follows:
"Membership in 'Close Encounters' is restricted to persons who are at least
18 years of age or older...Although it's difficult to verify age via this
medium, anyone found to have violated the age requirement will be denied
access to the sig at the discretion of the sig managers."
Other sig members have indicated that you are 17. If this is the case, then
I will have to remove you from the membership. If this is not the case, and
you can verify it by honestly telling me your age, then you can remain. If
you feel insulted that we are going to such great pains about this, then
perhaps Close Encounters is not really the sig for you.
Please reply to this message by Wednesday, October 16, before 11 PM EST or I
will have no choice but to take the necessary action.
Thank you.

Dear Service,
When I started using Delphi heavily about a month ago, several people
warned me in no uncertain terms about how cliquish the place was. I thought
they had an axe to grind for some other telecom service, so I just let it
pass.
Tonight the SIG managers of Close Encounters proved to me the hard way
that I was mistaken.
After joining the scheduled conf, the sysops started asking about my age
which never seemed to be a prob with any lem any other time in that SIG. When I
started joking about remembering World War I, they mde ade some rather Gestapo-
like comments about owing them straight answers, then promptly barred me
from the conference.
I had offered to call the SIG mgr and convince him voice-to-voice of
my age but the option of siml ply excluding someone who wasn't a SIG mgr
himself (or one of ther= ir older cronies) was apparently so much easier.
Later I learned that the mgr's traded quips about how strange I was
and not fit material for their SIG anyway.
When the heavi y usage I (and heavy bills) of September and October fall
back to the little-or-no-usage of the pro evious months, this first-hand
demonstration of cliquishness and cronie y-in sm in the Close Encounters group
is the reason why.

Arne

From this date on, I will personally handle any question about age. Until I

Remember the users are paying our way here. We must not be harsh, or appear

Dear Mr. Gibney;
During the early portion of our scheduled conference this past
saturday, Arne joined us. It had been brought to our attention that
he might not be over 18, a provision of membership as set forth in our
rules and the contract we hold with Delphi, and I thought to enquire.
He became evasive and refused to state his age directly. Tiglon, one
of our members was the only person who stated that he was 'old enough
to vote' but by this time he had already impressed me and several
others that perhaps he should not be at our conference. I then set up
a closed version of the conference until he left.
I have included in this letter, a partial transcript of that
conference covering Arne's arrival to my setting up the new conference.
I have deleted only the control characters (^M, ^H, ^G) and the extra
lines of input. (I run with echo set so my lines appear twice - the
duplicate lines are deleted). Sen messages have been kept in as well.
As you know, we do have a specified age limit of 18 and while we
recognize that we really connot verify that, it is our policy to
check if there are conflicting reports of an individuals age.
Otherwise, we question no one about their age preferring to
rely on their own honesty.
Also, a stipulation in the contract states that it is up to the
sig managers to enforce this age restriction. Had Arne been direct
I would have accepted that and let it be. However, he chose to remain
'mysterious', making 'smart' remarks about world wars, being way too
young to run for president and the like. While he did offer to talk on
the phone, he wanted a number to call 'collect'. Had he considered
having me call him, I might have done so, however, I refuse to give
out my non-published number for 'collect' calls. Also, in his case,
I probably would not give him my number under any conditions.

It is just possible that this matter could have been handled
a bit better and we would be willing to meet with Arne to discuss
this sig, and our rules and why we have them. However, I if he cannot
conduct himself consistant with the age he expects us to accept him as,
it is in the best interest of our membership not to allow him in.
Please note that our action involved only the conference itself. No
action has [yet] been taken to restrict access to the sig forum or
data bases as we are giving the benefit of the doubt as to his correct
age.
Respectfully; JOohn ohn P. Yerger.

Digital Archaeology: Dell Latitude E6520 | PeakD
Dell's Latitude line was designed for business users. They tended to have more solid construction and be a little more subdued in their looks than the more consumer oriented Inspiron line. In general, they seem to be of higher quality than Inspirons, at least in terms of construction. This Latitude E6520 features:

Digital Archaeology: Floppy Disk #14 – DEPRESS.DOC
This post includes the contents of DEPRESS.DOC. This file is dated September 2nd, 1985 and is in a subdirectory called TELEPSYC. This is an article on depression and its different categories. No name or other credit is listed in the file. I tried doing a web search on a few strings from this article but couldn't find anything so I'm not sure who wrote it. I believe this article came from a special interest group or some other kind of feature or area on Delphi called "TelePsych".

Digital Archaeology: Codex (Floppy Disk) #8 (part 18)
It's been a while but here's another post in this long running series. :)
A summary for those that haven't been keeping up with this series:
I found a bunch of 5.25" disks at a thrift store a number of years ago. I finally got around to acquiring a 5.25" disk drive and extracting the contents a while back. Since then I have been posting the contents here.
Based on the contents, at least some of these disks were apparently once owned by someone named Connie A. Buys who used to run the “Close Encounters” Special Interest Group (SIG) on Delphi in the mid 1980s.
A specific definition of this SIG was found in a previous document on one of the disks: “This SIG, known as “Close Encounters”, is a forum for the discussion of relationships that develop via computer services like the Source, CompuServe, and Delphi. Our primary emphasis is on the sexual aspects of those relationships.”
Everything was text based from whatever terminal program you used to dial in to Delphi’s servers. Many of these disks have forum messages, e-mails and chat session logs. All of this is pre-internet stuff and I don’t know if there are any archives in existence today of what was on Delphi in the 1980s. In any case, much of this stuff would have been private at the time and some of it is quite personal.
I've been splitting up the contents of this disk (descriptively labeled “File Disk”) since it contains a number of documents, some of which are pretty long. A 5.25" floppy disk can still hold an impressive amount of info when it is just text.
This post contains a chat log from the Close Encounters Sig Conference on October 12th, 1985. The subject was nominally adult magazines.

.Marti> I'm too embarassed to buy Playgirl...
.Marti> and the others don't turn me on except for the few times..
.Marti> there is a man involved...
.Marti> a lady with her legs spread is not exactly a turn on for
me...
.Marti> nothing good looking about female genitals!! GA
.greg> !
.Myself> guess it depends on your point of view - actually there must
be something good (looking or otherwise) since nearly every
normal male keeps trying to get inside them.
.Myself> ga greg
.Marti>

.Myself> not really greg
.greg> late teens and 20s. As I got older, I stopped...
.Myself> I buy them off n on
.greg> ...
.Myself> right !!! humor !! haha
.greg> only realize why now, since didn't really give it much thought
before..
.greg> Tho the women in the mags may be lovely, their sexuality is
presented in a way that is often...
.greg> harsh...something is lacking...sense of warmth,
tenderness...*something.*
.Marti>
.Marti> ?
.Myself> ga marti
.Marti> I remember babysitting...eons ago...
.Marti> and found a Playboy mag in the rack...
.Marti> and was schocked to see a picture of a lady's bare breasts...
.Marti> Now you see *everything* on TV...
. why did you loook then Marti?

.Marti> anyway....I love erotic pictures of men and women making
love..
.John> 'evening all.
.Marti> but greg is right...a lot of the stuff is...
.Myself> true, but I was not (fortunately) raised under that way of
thinking.

.Myself> It seems that the general idea back then was to provide a
sort of shock value
.Myself> and keep it going - mainly because of the old taboos many
grew up with
.Myself> of course it has ceased to shock most folks
.Myself> ga joey
JOEY> Well, I only subscribe to one so called mens' magazine.....
JOEY> And that is Playboy. Because they don't go in for the cheap....
JOEY> "pink" shots. I agree with Marti on that point. I don't see....
JOEY> anything sexy about a woman with her legs spread wide open.ga
.Myself> right on one point, but I don't think that what they did
with the miss america pics was a good score for them
.Myself> ga greg
.Myself>
.greg> when I look at the shots in some of the newer mags, I get the
feeling that the photographers, deep down, may not like women
very much...
.greg> but marti's point is well taken, and john's, too...
.greg> we're less the buttoned-down society than we were when Playboy
first hit the racks...

really...

.Myself> exactly
JOEY> ga
.<> bingo
.Marti>
.Myself> anyway...
.<> :::thinking:::
.<> ?
.Myself> I got tired of reading all about how these two or three or
more got together and invariably started out withdope, or
booze or something.
.Myself> i mean, I can get high enough on my own, and those other
things simply kill the best part of the experience
.Myself> but anesthetising your sensory system or worse.
JOEY> - signed off -
.Myself> then there was one letter I read three times.
.Myself> no it wasn't that good.
.Myself> it just appeared as a new letter in three magazines over the
space of several years.
.<> Must have been impressive tho if you remembered it
.Myself> which only shows that at least some are outright
fabrications.
.Myself> true. if only for the basic recurrent theme
.<> SOME?????? Most would be closer...but I enjoy them as

.Marti> Hug, Joey

.<> wunnerful

.Myself> and now they like to give it to males.
.Myself> and the rest is 'his'tory.
JOEY>
.<> Oh that's a thrilling story John (urk)
JOEY> Is there a full moon tonight?

.Myself> and there was one other that was a totally impossible
situation I read that one in two mags several years apart.
.Myself> girl goes out with some guys from the office and ends up
.Myself> literally with something everywhere. and no way it could

JOEY> Fun office.
.Myself> right
JOEY> Not enough room in my office.

.Myself> this guy has his girl in the computer room
.Myself> and they do it on top or an 80M-byte drive
.Myself> of course some gets into the system and the disk crashes
with a horendous screech. but they had fun
.Myself> I have noticed an overall trend though of very poor writing.
.Myself> some of then sound almost dumb enough to be true, but not
interesting
.Myself> ok, that covers letters, and pictures - now ladies, care to

.Marti> I like you talking, John

Digital Archaeology: Dell Latitude E5500
The Latitude line has traditionally been Dell's business line of laptops with the Inspiron line targeted towards the home market. Though they are cosmetically different, they often share a lot of the same hardware internally. The Latitude E5500, or at least this one, features a Core 2 Duo T7250 CPU @ 2 GHz and Intel Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics. Hightlights include:

The Dell Latitude D610 is a Pentium M based laptop that was a slight upgrade to the D600. While looking nearly identical, there are enough internal physical differences to make swapping parts like the motherboard, LCD, Keyboard, etc. between the two impractical.
