Atari Jaguar

Atari Jaguar ad

“Here’s something to gnaw on. The new Jaguar interactive multimedia system has a mind blowing 64 bits of power, compared to a simply 16 bits for the competition. 64 bits means 16 million colors in a 3D world. Breakneck speeds. Cat-like control. And special effects like you see in the movies.

How does it sound? Well, if this ad had a volume button your mother would be yelling at you to turn it down. Car crashes, alien screeches, jet engines and other bone rattling stereo CD quality sounds will make you jump out of your seat.

When you do, make sure to run to the nearest store. Everyone else will be there chomping at the bit to buy one.

What we’re really saying is Jaguar’s 64 bits eats the competition alive. Sink your teeth into it and you’ll see what we mean. Get Bit by Jaguar.”

The Atari Jaguar was Atari’s last attempt at a home console. The Atari Jaguar was released in 1993 and discontinued in 1996 after selling only 250,000 units.

The Jaguar had a lot going for it when it was released. It was the most powerful system available (even if the 64-bits claim was a bit of an exageration… it would more accurately be called a 32-bit system) and it was affordable. However, the multi-chip design made it difficult to program for and there were too few 3rd party releases and without quality software, no system can survive. In addition, the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation were released in 1995 and for the most part, these were technically superior systems, easier to program for and had more 3rd party software. Despite the price advantage (the Jaguar was much cheaper at only $149) and the release of a CD peripheral, it just could not compete.

This failure was pretty much the end of Atari. Atari left the home video game market for good and Hasbro Interactive bought out Atari in the late 1990s.

However, the Jaguar lives on. The patents were released to the public domain and homebrew games are still being developed for the console. Jaguar hardware also lived a little longer as the basis for the Atari arcade games Area 51 (1995), Maximum Force (1996) and the combo version (1998).

Tips & Tricks (Spring 1994)

Tips & Tricks (Spring 1994)

I suppose the Tips & Tricks was the closest thing to a successor to VideoGames & Computer Entertainment that there was. Many of the same people were involved. However, while VG&CE was my favorite magazine while it was still around, I don't think I ever bought an issue of Tips & Trick. While I sometimes enjoyed that type of content, my main interest was in news and reviews type stuff. This is the premiere issue of Tips & Tricks from Spring 1994 and it includes:

Strategy

  • General Chaos - A squad based overhead action game from Electronic Arts for the Sega Genesis.

  • Double Switch - A full motion video game from Sega for the Sega CD that is along the lines of Night Trap.

  • Mortal Komba - Mortal Kombat debuts on home systems for the Super NES, Genesis, Game Boy and Game Gear. This guide helps with all of them.

  • Mortal Kombat II - Some tips and tricks for the Mortal Kombat II arcade game.

Table of Contents from the Spring 1994 issue of Tips & Tricks

Departments

  • Power Up! - An introduction to a brand new magazine along with a glossary of terms including tip, trick, easter egg, bug, combo, and boss.

  • Readers' Tips - Tips from readers for Clay Fighter (Super NES) and Street Fighter II Turbo (SNES).

Table of Contents from the Spring 1994 issue of Tips & Tricks (continued)

Tips

  • Genesis Tips - Tips for Battletoads/Double Dragon, Micro Machines, Pink Goes to Hollywood, Flash Back, Mortal Kombat, Aladdin, Sunset Riders, Jungle Strike, Shinobi III, and Ecco the Dolphin.
  • Sega CD Tips - Tips for Stellar-Fire, Double Switch, Microcosm, The Terminator, and Sonic CD.

  • Super NES Tips - Tips for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Tournament Fighters, Battletoads / Double Dragon, Super Nova, Pink Goes to Hollywood, Battlemaniacs, Cacoma Knight, Tom & Jerry, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, WWF Royal Rumble, and Taz-Mania.

  • Jaguar Tips - Tips for Trevor McFur in the Crescent Galaxy.

  • NES Tips - Tips for Battletoads / Double Dragon and Batman Returns.

VideoGames: The Ultimate Gaming Magazine (June 1994)

VideoGames: The Ultimate Gaming Magazine (June 1994)

Video gaming magazine can have a complicated lineage. One of my favorites, VideoGames & Computer Entertainment morphed into VideoGames: The Ultimate Gaming Magazine but many of the editors/writers I liked went on to reboot Electronic Games instead. VideoGames spawned Tips and Tricks which, though they overlapped for a while, essentially replaced it. I followed VG&CE but not so much VideoGames and Tips and Tricks... Anyway, the June 1994 issue of VideoGames includes:

News

  • Input - A discussion of the then new video games rating system.

  • Press Start - More about the ratings system and the political pressure that led to it; Nintendo announces the Super Game Boy; Revolution-X featuring Aerosmith is released in the arcades; an interview with the makers of Way of the Warrior for the 3DO; NovaLogic works on helicopter sim for the Saturn; Philips announces lower priced ($299) CD-i; and more...

Previews

  • Demolition Man - An action game for the Sega Genesis based on the movie of the same name featuring Sylvester Stalone, Wesley Snipes and Sandra Bulloch.

  • Tennis All-Stars - A tennis game for the Genesis in the new "J-Cart" format. A J-Cart in addition to containing the game also added two additional controller ports for 4-player action. This tennis game allowed 4 players in a doubles game.

  • Psycho Pinball - Another J-Cart, this one featuring video pinball with six tables.

  • Kasumi Ninja - What would turn out to be a pretty decent fighting game for the Atari Jaguar.

  • Doom - A pretty good translation of Doom for the Atari Jaguar (they seemed to keep porting this game to new systems for years and years) but really, no version beats the original PC version.

Table of Contents from the June 1994 issue of VideoGames

Tips & Tricks

  • Tempest 2000 - Tips to skip levels and to play bonus levels.

  • NBA Jam - Tricks to enable the special guest players from the arcade version, enable power-ups such as speeding up game play, set your player "on fire" for the whole game, and more.

  • Ground Zero Texas - A mini strategy guide to help get you through this FMV game.

  • Robocop Versus The Terminator - A trick to unlock the MA-17 version of this game for the Genesis.

  • ...and lots more!

Strategy Guides

  • Daffy Duck: The Marvin Missions - General tips as well as guides to each level of this side-scrolling action game featuring Marvin the Martian and Daffy Duck for the Super Nintendo.

  • Kether - Strategy guide for a weird sort of 3D shooter that nobody had ever heard of for the CD-i.

  • Tempest 2000 - Make it through all 100 levels of this update to the classic arcade game on the Atari Jaguar.

Reviews

  • Super Street Fighter II Turbo - This review is for the arcade version of the game which had just been released.

  • Spectre - This game for the Super Nintendo is essentially a 3D battle game in which you are placed in a flying craft in an arena and must battle it out with robots. It's an ok game but without much variety. The PC version was better for the simple reason that you could play over a network with multiple people.

  • Rocko's Modern Life - This is a platform/puzzle game for the Super Nintendo based on the Nickelodeon cartoon of he same name. It ends up being pretty good for a kids game based on a license.

  • Super Loopz - A puzzle game for the Super Nintendo in which you must construct polygons. There are various modes including two-player cooperative and competitive modes. It is a pretty good game if you are a fan of puzzle games.

  • Flintstones - This game based on the cartoon for the Super Nintendo mixes a variety of genres including racing, platform, and board game. However, it ends up being too short and easy to provide much value.

  • Jetsons - A fairly unique platform game for the Super Nintendo based on the cartoon. It is an excellent game overall but the challenge level makes it better for older players than for younger kids.

  • Asterix - An average (at best) platform game for the Sega Genesis.

  • Mortal Kombat - The Sega CD version of this game offers a few relatively minor upgrades including some FMV, a soundtrack and a few more frames of animation.

  • Third World War - A strategy game for the Sega CD that the reviewer compared to KOEI's offerings. The graphics aren't great, the interface is complicated and the voice acting is pretty awful but as a strategy game it's not bad.

  • Rise of the Dragon - A cyberpunk themed graphic adventure for the Sega CD sounds like a good idea but unfortunately, this particular implementation is average at best. It was also a conversion of a game that had been around on the PC for a few years already.

  • Micro Reviews - Short reviews of several games including Spider-Man and the X-Men (Game Gear), Aladdin (Game Gear), G2 Rider (Game Gear), and more.

Other Cool Stuff

  • Alien vs. Predator: Stalking the Jaguar, Burning Up the Arcades - Interview with Atari producer James Hampton about Alien vs. Predator for the Atari Jaguar. Also, a look at the arcade version of AvP which is a completely different game (fighting game vs. FPS).

  • SportsWire: Sports game news, reviews, previews and more - Midway releases NBA Jam TE for the arcade; Sterling Sharpe signs with Jaleco for a Super Nintendo football game called Sterling Sharpe: End to End...but I don't remember this one; previews include World Cup USA '94 (Super NES), Mario Andretii Racing (Genesis), Champions World Class Soccer (Genesis), and Suzuka 8 Hours II (arcade); a review of Baseball Tonight for the Super Nintendo; a review of Double Dribble: The Playoff Edition for the Genesis; a review of Jammit for the Genesis; and a review for Soccer Shootout for the Super Nintendo.

  • Hardware: Gaming accessories galore - New items include the Super Link multiplayer adapter for the SNES, the Mega Mouse for the Genesis, the Interactor Virtual Reality Vest, and more.

EGM 2 (August 1994)

EGM 2 (August 1994)

For a few years anyway, one issue enough just wasn't enough for Electronic Gaming Monthly. So they came up with EGM 2 (EGM^2...whatever). Each one was in the neighborhood of 200 pages most months and sometimes larger. The August 1994 issue of EGM 2 includes:
  • Knuckle Down with the Latest Installment in the Sonic Series! - We've got the scoop on Sega's latest step in technology, the add-on cart Sonic & Knuckles. Of course, Dr. Robotnik is here once again to make sure both of these boys have a rough time. You'll have a ball visiting all-new levels and learning the secrets of the game. Sonic fans all across the glob won't want to miss it.

  • Put On Your Driving Gloves and Goggles for Daytona USA - Start your engines racing fans! Daytona USA is crashing into the arcade! In this issue of EGM 2, we've devoted four super-intense pages to the quarter-muncher. Hold on tight as wee speed through every turn, hazard and straightaway in this Virtua Racing-style game.

  • Take a Peek at the Games for the 3DO and 32X! - Fresh from this year's Summer CES, readers will get a chance to preview the long list of games for the 32-Bit 3DO and 32X systems. Behold such 3DO games as Star Control, Off World, GEX, Samurai Showdown, Alone in the Dark, Sesame Street, and Road Rash. EGM 2 (June 1996)

EGM 2 (June 1996)
Unlike the world of today where physical video game magazines are extinct for all practical purposes, the mid 1990s were overflowing with such publications. So much so that Electronic Gaming Monthly couldn't get enough into their main multi-hundred page publication and they published a second monthly magazine, EGM^2. The June 1996 issue includes: Departments

  • Advertising Index
Tricks
  • Alien Trilogy - Finally, the long-awaited Cheat Menu has now been found...great cheats available!
  • Night Warriors - Double your turbo speed and get a non-shaded pause screen with this code!
  • Game Shark Codes - The Shark can be your friend if you enter the passwords correctly for the SS and PS.
  • SFA 2 - Uncover Chun-Li's old uniforms and two hidden fighting stages by entering this code.
Cover Story
  • Play with the Power of a God in this Latest Fighter - The latest entry into the fighting genre is another great title by the gurus at Williams but not by the same MK team. This new 3-D fighter was designed by a completely different group, however, they do the Williams name proud. It is an exceptional example of true 3-D perspective fighting, with all the moves, combos and fatalaties to keep fighting fans happy. Check out the first of many articles on War Gods, covering the initial stages and moves that will get you up and playing.
Strategies
  • Fight or Die for your Party in Guardian Heroes - Guardian Heroes, Treasure's first action/adventure title for the Saturn, pits you against a number of worthy (and just plain tough) foes. In this EGM^2, there is a six-page jam-packed guide to help players with moves, opponents, levels and more. It also details characters' backgrounds and strategy. As well, there are several detailed maps pointing out important information gamers should know. There is also a quick reference guide that gives players some very useful tips.

  • Skeleton Warriors Has More Than Meets the Eye - Deceptively complicated with gameplay and skill level gradually increasing, Skeleton Warriors might be too much for a non-observant player. With huge numbers of enemies on screen at one time, many can become overwhelmed during any point in this action game. However, in this issue there is a detailed guide that takes the reader by the hand and helps him/her through the more difficult levels of gameplay. With much-needed hints on Bosses and levels, this guide won't leave anyone stranded.

  • They Don't have a Backbone, But They Sure Are Tough - Who said playing with worms couldn't be fun? They are if you send in a unit to destroy an opponent with mines, missiles and sheep (yes, sheep!). In this mud-free strategy guide, players will be victorious because everything to know about this game has been packed into this issue. Find out which strategy works best and what weapons to use during certain situations. For example, the Prod works well if an enemy is close to a cliff. However, if you want to knock the opponent forward, the Dragonball works best!

Electronic Gaming Monthly (February 1995)

When you think of video game magazines, it's hard not to think of Electronic Gaming Monthly. While there were a number of popular video game magazines, EGM was king of the hill for a long time. The May 1995 issue includes:

We have compared both systems' release of the wooden labyrinth game, TAMA. Don't forget to check out the PlayStation's cool games Ridge Racer, Parodius and Hot Blooded Family plus Saturn's Myst and Gale Racer. Who will take the number one spot?

  • Mortal Kombat III: Could This be the Last Bloody Fight? - Just when you thought the kombat was over, plans for Mortal Kombat III have been brewing. In this exclusive story, take a look at who will be in the game and who won't be returning. Plus, secret moves, new outfits, rumors circulating about the game and when it will be released. It's time to go back to the Outworld for Round Three!
